I did this because someone on a forum told me that this ROM could run TomTom Mobile 5.20, and I after months of frustration trying to get it work on the default Orange shipped ROM, I wanted to believe him so much that I cried tears of pure excitement all the way through this procedure, and actually hovered a few millimetres above my seat.

If you have already applied the AKU update from Orange, you won't get past step 3, so stop now, and email developers@orange.co.uk. Tell them about theapplication you're developing for smartphone, give them your name, mobile number, and IMEI, and they'll send you an application unlocking tool within a few hours. Then, on with the haxoring.

Step 1) Use Jeyo Mobile Companion to back up your messages, contacts and call history to a .spd file (File -> Export in Jeyo).

Step 2 Optional) Back up your Orange ROM using this guide here. I know that a 32Mb MiniSD is not sufficient to store the backed up ROM, so you'll need something bigger - I used my 512Mb. When trying to connect with the modified TerraTermPro, make sure you kill ActiveSync first, as it hogs the USB connection to the phone. This procedure WIPES YOUR MINISD CARD!

Step 3) Application unlock the phone by following this guide here.

Step 4) SIM unlock the phone by following this guide.

Step 5) Using the same tool you used in Step 4, run the CID modifier. This sets the operator code of your phone to all 1s (the SuperCID), rather than a combination of decimals which would otherwise represent Orange, Tmob, etc.

Step 6) Download the iMate SP5 English v2 ROM (on storage/Smartphone), this has slipstreamed in the AKU update which enables push email Exchange2k3 support, but DONT RUN IT YET.

Step 7) Download the Typhoon NBF Tool.

Step 8) Run the Imate ROM installer exe, and wait for the dialog with the image of the phone to appear (just after it's finished extracting temp install files). DO NOT PROCEED ANY FURTHER YET, WE HAVE TO BEGIN TEH HAXOR.

Step 9) Hit up %TEMP% in explorer, and find the folder called "pftxx.tmp" where xx are random alphanums. In that folder is a file called nk.nbf - this is your lovely new rom, pristine and resplendent in its glory.

Step 10) Using the Typhoon NBF tool you got in step 7, open the nk.nbf file. Do this, then this. Notice that the operator field is now 'emptily', as our impoverished Russian friend indicates with his blindingly communist photoshop skills, which means that this ROM can be applied to phones from any mobile operator. Save the file somewhere, then replace the original one with your newly hacked one.

Step 11) Make sure you have an activesync connection up and running, then press on with the ROM update wizard. The patching will boot you back into the engineering display you enjoyed and got scared by earlier, this is fine. The progress bar sticks at 99% for a trouser-browningly long time. This too is fine, just stick it out.

Step 12) The phone will boot slowly applying lots of settings, then will prompt for yet another fucking reboot(tm). You are now done. Note the distinct lag of bloaty orange branding, the speed of the reboots, and the responsiveness of the menus.

Step 13) Recreate the profiles for Orange GPRS/MMS/WAP using this guide wot I bashed out: SetUpGPRSEtcOnAnOrangeSPVC600AfterFlashing

Step 14) Reinstall all your shit, yo.
